Sugar & Fair Trade

Sugar & Fair Trade

Most imported sugar cane is grown by impoverished farmers in Central and South America, and Africa who are subject to a declining world market price, environmental degradation (regular herbicides and pesticide practices), and hazardous working conditions. Fair Trade certification ensures that sugar cane farmers receive a fair price for their harvest and that farmers and their families receive a better income for their hard work – allowing them to hold on to their land, keep their kids in school and invest in the quality of their harvest.

The Kootenay Co-op carries a complete line of Sugars produced by “Wholesome Sweeteners” of the USA. This company is committed to supplying organic & natural sugar products from ethically and environmentally responsible growers & manufacturers.
