How would you describe your company?

The Purist Pantry is a budding food manufacturer tucked away in the Kootenay Mountains in the small town of Rossland, BC.  We are marching on a BIG mission to Reinvent the Modern Home Pantry.  We’re taking it back to the way things used to be, before mass production took over our diets.  A time where scratch cooking was KING.

We cook all of our products to order, made by scratch with raw and whole ingredients ensuring that when you find our products on the shelf you know they are FRESH and Nutritious. As such we keep a short shelf-life for our products and are PROUD TO EXPIRE.  Quality is our top priority and we carefully source our ingredients that are all Organic and Non-GMO.  We operate an exclusively Gluten Free kitchen ensuring that our products are a great wholefood resource to those with food sensitivities.

Made from Scratch

Simply put…we’re dialing it back…and slowing it down.  Moving back to handmade, slowly developing flavors with the use of time rather than additives…allowing for the TRUE flavors of simple ingredients to shine.

How long have you been in business?

Product development started back in 2014 and took several years to get the first product (Mountain Bites) just right.  Mountain Bites made their debut at the Rossland Mountain Market Society’s weekly Farmers market in September of 2016.  The product and company received overwhelming community support and positive feedback leading to the expansion of the product production and distribution in December of 2016.  In November of 2017, we built our own production facility and are now distributing throughout BC, and into AB with hopes of expansion throughout North America over the next few years.

What motivated you to start?

Everything.  The world around us, our kids, our families, friends and all the people we have yet to meet but whom we hope to impact.

We share a passion to change the world…to make it a better place.  Over the years, we became greatly disenchanted by the foods that were on most conventional grocery store shelves.  These shelves are filled with foods that are generally over processed and packed with preservatives, processed sugars and sodium to provide a long shelf life.  Our belief is that the convenience afforded by these additives is at the cost of our health and well-being.  So, we set out to re-create everyday household staples – breads, crackers, granola bars, thoughtful indulgences (aka sweets), and we continue to develop our offerings.

The Peanut Highway Bite. Classic combo of peanut and chocolate, where it all began.
The Need for Seeds Bite, created at the request of Rosslanders, who needed a healthy (and tasty) option to send with their kids to nut-free schools. Packed with seeds, paired with cocoa and cranberry, and drizzled with dark chocolate.
Snow Capped Almonds Bite: Lemon, blueberry, almond and coconut

What are some of your greatest joys?

We take great pride and joy when we have the opportunity to serve our customers.  Our communities and the world are recognizing the need for change in the food we have access to, we are humbled and honoured to be a part of that change.  We gain inspiration from the feedback we receive after we share our products, our story, and our mission.

We also love to partner with other producers and craftsmen.  We use a local chocolatier, Beth from Belicious Chocolates, for all of the chocolate that is incorporated into our product.   We also use a local carpenter, A. Weibe Woodworking,  who handcrafts each of our displays from scrap wood allowing us to reduce our waste output which is incredibly important to us as a food manufacturer.

Lastly, but very importantly we are thrilled to be in the beginning stages of providing jobs to our community!  As a manufacture that processes by hand we celebrate as we grow because it means that we get to provide another job to our community!

What is your vision for your company?

To change the world…we won’t limit its reach or try to define it…its evolving everyday.  The Adventure of life that we seek and we’re savouring every moment.

Why is local food and/or local purchasing important to you?

Local food and local purchasing will change the world.  There are so many positive effects of local suppliers and the reduction of so many harms.  It reduces fuel consumption, it reduces packaging, it keeps fresh seasonal food top of mind and it builds stronger community.  We live a lifestyle focused on local and want to influence that way of life as much as we can.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?

The Co-op and all its farmers, producers, craftspeople, customers – everyone involved – combine to make a beautiful orchestra which should be cherished and embraced by all who make it possible.  We love the opportunity to serve you and be a part of the wonderful food community that the Co-Op has created.

Sharing the joy! Melinda demoing at the Kootenay Co-op.
