General Manager Recruitment Update

A great job in a great community – Kootenay Co-op General Manager

That’s the headline for the job posting the Co-op is currently advertising on both its website and other grocery and co-op career websites across the country. As we enter this momentous period in Kootenay Co-op history, we will soon be appointing a permanent General Manager to inspire Co-op managers and staff to high performance based on the Co-operative Principles.

Your Co-op Board has appointed two Directors to lead the search process, supported by an experienced food co-op consultant. The search will be open to internal and external applicants and we hope to appoint the best candidate by the end of May.

This month, the Search Committee refreshed the GM job description, which was approved by the Board. In addition to significant experience in grocery operations management and support for co-operative principles, we are looking for exceptional personal qualities. As the job description notes,

“As a leader of leaders, the General Manager will: engage member-owners and work effectively with Board members and other volunteers; balance personal humility and professional effectiveness in leading and mentoring strong teams of managers and staff; lead by example in promoting integrity, respect, transparency, accountability and initiative; and build a shared sense of purpose.”

We are receiving strong interest in the position. We know that Nelson is a desirable location and we are offering one of the best co-op jobs in the country. We are casting the recruiting net wide enough to bring in many candidates who meet the qualifications. At the same time, we too must meet the expectations of candidates. Not only must the search process treat them with professionalism and respect, we need to ensure the conditions of employment are fair and the job expectations reasonable and exciting.

We have already begun circulating the job advertisement as widely as possible. You can find it here if you know someone who may be interested. Submissions will be accepted through March 4, 2016. The Search Committee will screen candidates and develop a short list of two or three individuals. The Board is committed to an inclusive process to review selected candidates, including Co-op directors, managers and staff.
