Who is the creator behind Black & Beck Foods?
What do you make?
I make unique condiment dipping/marinating sauces with a BC apple purée base.
How would you describe your company?
We are small scale and strive to make a simple and clean tasting product. All of our sauces contain BC fruit and are GMO-free, sodium-free, vegan, low in sugar and allergen friendly (no nuts, seeds or gluten ingredients). We want to help people to think outside the box when it comes to condiments.
How long have you been in business?
I started making fruit-based sauces when my girls were babies…over a dozen years ago! I have been selling at markets for about five years, and to retail stores within the last year.
What motivated you to start?
First I taught myself home canning, and I wanted to utilize local fruit. I love to cook and create new recipes. I also have an entrepreneur spirit and I like being my own boss!
What are some of your greatest joys?
I love it when someone tastes the sauces and savours the innovative flavours. I have enjoyed developing recipes and bringing the product together with branding to the grocery shelf – this has been a huge task with many hurdles, but the sense of accomplishment in the end is very rewarding.
What are some of your greatest challenges?
Distribution, costing and recipe formulations. Not wanting to compromise. Long hours and needing to connect with and bounce ideas off other processors. The Small Scale Food Processing Association has been a helpful resource and is a great network for BC processors.
What is your vision for your company?
I want to help reawaken the love and enjoyment of food, and enhance understanding of how important this is to every aspect of our wellbeing. I believe our innovative sauce alternatives can help bring everyday eating to life.
My goals include keeping the formulations simple, developing a great and recognizable brand, and being able to accommodate a lot of dietary needs and preferences. I want to get my non-GMO certification (our recipes are GMO-free now, but I would like to get that proof/verification for my customers) and I would eventually like to switch to all organic ingredients and organic certification as volume and costs allow.
Why is local food important to you?
Local food is exciting because you can learn the story behind the product, see the seed of the dream. Many people have fantastic food business ideas, and local support can make all the difference. Local food also enhances sustainability.
If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?
Thank you for your interest and support!
