You can sign up to save your spot in the form below or at Customer Service once registration for the session opens, on the 1st of the prior month. Check out the rest of the books on the Book Club Page and share your thoughts on the Facebook Event.
The September meeting will be led by City Councillor Anna Purcell to discuss Happy City: Transforming Our Lives Through Urban Design by Charles Montgomery

From Anna Purcell:
Why do certain places make us feel better than others? How can design change the way we see and treat strangers? Can we physically build more trust and altruism into our neighbourhoods? Does our environment actually change our values?
In his book Happy Cities, Charles Montgomery takes lessons from psychology, neuroscience, behavioural economics, and design activism and explores how the built environment affects our wellbeing, and how we may be able to fix cities to improve our lives.
Montgomery says that the business of city thinking and building has been the sole property of elite architects, planners, engineers and land developers for too long — many of whom have not bothered to gather evidence on the effects of their work. As he says in his book and on his website, he believes they need more than encouragement, they need help. He asks, who has the right to shape a city? He finds the answer in French Philosopher Henri Lefebvre: this right is not something that can be given to you by a government or organization. It’s earned through habitation: if you live out your life in the shared urban landscape, then you have the natural right to help shape its future.
For anyone who is interested, we can meet before the discussion in front of the library at 5:30 to take a walk downtown together and do a Happiness Audit of Nelson!
