Though some of us may be wondering about the nature of democracy these days, it is a practice that is alive and well at the Co-op! We are fundamentally a democratic institution, with an election for Board members each year in September. The Co-op Board is made up of 7 co-op member-owners, one of whom is elected by the staff to be the Employee Director.
As a governance Board, we don’t deal with operational issues – our 80+ staff take care of that with admirable enthusiasm and skill. Rather, the Board focuses on the direction that the Co-op takes, ensuring that our fundamental principles and mission guide the daily practices and path of the store.
The Directors bring a range of skills that complement each other and enhance our collective knowledge and practice as a Board. This is a particularly interesting and exciting time to be on the Board, with all the complexities and unexplored territory before us as we work our way to a new store at the far end of Baker Street.
Each year, the Co-op’s Board election process seeks to ensure that we have a happy combination of new energy and ideas coupled with some experience and history with the Co-op. This year, two positions will be up for election and we are hoping to have a great roster of candidates that draw from this dynamic and creative community that we all call home. With some 11,500 members, we know we have an embarrassment of riches, so to speak, to draw from for candidates!
So consider joining a group of people dedicated to the health and vision of our Co-op and pick up a Board Candidate Package from Customer Service or email the Board for a copy to be sent to you. Simply go to our Contact Us page and send us a message.
Should you wish to sit down with a Board member to learn more about the process of running in this year’s elections, don’t hesitate to invite one of us out for coffee or tea. It’s on us!
Abra Brynne, Board President
