Organization of the Month: West Kootenay EcoSociety
Vision: “The West Kootenay region is the pre-eminent rural-Canadian model of inclusive and ecologically sustainable living. 100% renewable energy is in place in all sectors notably, transportation, buildings and industry.”
In this vision, “Local food is affordable for and accessible to local residents and grown sustainably. The region’s ecosystems are thriving and protected. Oppressed and vulnerable people, and Indigenous Peoples and First Nations are engaged in local decision-making.”
Wow, talk about a lofty vision!
Here’s how EcoSociety plans to make their vision reality: “We organize with our grassroots community leaders, and advocate to our decision-makers on developing local social, political, and economic solutions to environmental and equity problems.”
This month’s featured organization is a non-profit community-driven organization that brings together local residents to protect the natural environment while building just, equitable, healthy, and livable communities in the West Kootenay region.
EcoSociety’s work revolves around its three pillars:
building local, sustainable food systems,
taking action on climate change, and
protecting wild places, air, and water for future generations.
And here’s how these pillars are put into action on the ground: “Our Nelson markets feature growers from within 100 km to support local rural agriculture, and our participation in the BCAFM coupon program provides $12,000 of fresh, healthy, sustainable food for low-income seniors and families. The 100% Renewable Kootenays initiative aims to transition the entire West Kootenay region onto 100% renewable energy by 2050, including transportation, heating & cooling, electricity, waste management, and industry, doing our part to mitigate the worst effects of climate change. Through our long history with Kokanee Creek Nature Centre, and our soon to be developed Old Growth program, EcoSociety is working to connect local residents with our stunning surroundings to inspire long-term stewardship of our treasured area. Join us in caring for our beautiful mountain enclave – join EcoSociety today!”
