Glade Organics

Ross and Mira are new to the world of farming, but it seems like they’re all green thumbs. Their produce is truly gorgeous and absolutely delicious and we just can’t get enough of it. They love hard work and working outside… which is a good thing, because farming is a non-stop endeavor!

farm!

Who are the farmers at Glade Organics?

Ross Petrie, an Irishman, and Mira Grbich, a local from Pass Creek. We are first-generation farmers.

This year we have additional help for the first time and have been happy to welcome Louis to the team!

Where are you located?

We are located just south of the Glade General Store in the beautiful West Kootenay Valley.

And what do you grow?

We grow a wide range of vegetables and an assortment of varieties of those veggies to meet the dietary needs and culinary desires of our customers.

Your produce is gorgeous! How would you describe your farm?

Glade Organics is a small-scale veggie farm. We are certified organic through KOGS, #92, and we believe in organic practices. We want to build an organic sense of community by bringing organic options closer to people’s homes. We are passionate about growing produce that tastes great and is clean, healthy, and of the highest quality.

We appreciate the many ways that our farm has allowed us to connect with our community. We operate our farm as a clean, green space that promotes community and relationships while caring for the environment and ourselves.

How long have you been doing this for?

This year is our forth season on our farm. Mira farmed for a few seasons, including an internship year, before she and Ross founded Glade Organics together. We have been learning so much each year and are enjoying putting all that into practice.

What motivated you to start?

This was all Ross’ idea. He wanted to do something meaningful. In essence, he wanted us to “be the change we want to see in the world,” as Gandhi once said.

What are some of your greatest joys?

We thoroughly enjoy working outdoors and working hard. One always has to keep moving.

What are some of your greatest challenges?

We find that it’s hard to stop working; there is always so much to do on a farm! There are just not enough hours in a day within such a short season to do everything and to feed everyone!

What is your vision for your farm?

To never stop learning.

We do our best to operate our farm with integrity, communication, awareness and co-operation between communities, people and the environment.

Our friend Bill the Frog. He hangs out with the peppers and helps control the pests!

Why is local food important to you?

The local communities purchase from the local farmer and then that local farmer makes their local purchases at the local stores, which, if independent and locally owned, keeps the money in the local economy. And arguably more importantly, the carbon footprint on local food is so much lower than, in British Columbia’s case, buying from California.

If you could deliver a message directly to Co-op members/customers, what would it be?

Thank you for being a responsible consumer; keep it local!
