Board Development: New Directors


Greetings from the Board Development Committee, the body charged with ensuring that the governance of the Kootenay Co-op is overseen on behalf of the membership by well-informed, skilled, dedicated and passionate supporters of the mission, values and vision of our co-operative.

Board Regeneration

In spring and summer, the committee’s work turns to planning for the regeneration of the Board at our September Annual General Meeting. In addition to a broad call for nominations from members to stand as candidates for election, the committee identified member-owners with skills and attributes to complement the returning Board members, and engaged them to consider running for the Board.

From this effort emerged three strong community leaders who are eager to join the Board in September: Abra Brynne, Alex Berland and Stephan Martineau will join incumbents Liz Babcock and Andrew Jarrett, along with Jon Steinman, who has one year left in his term. As per the Co-op’s Rules, the seventh director was appointed by Staff and Co-op Managers to serve as Employee Director – Cathy-Ann Glockner, Customer Service Assistant Manager, will fill that role again for the coming term. Because the number of candidates does not exceed the number of seats on the board, there will not be an election process, and these member-owners will be acclaimed to the Board to serve on behalf of the membership.

We are looking forward to supporting this team of members with a strong orientation and training program so that they can focus diligently on the many exciting challenges this year will bring to the Co-op.

Get to Know Your New Board

In place of a “Meet-the-Candidates” event, but continuing our effort to allow members to learn more about their Board, acclaimed Board directors have responded to some questions in an AGM pamphlet, available online and at Customer Service. Members will also have an opportunity to hear the new directors speak at the AGM on September 23rd, and at our Director Days during Co-op Week, which begins this year on October 11th.

Plans for the AGM are well underway – September 23rd promises to be an engaging and memorable event to celebrate the Co-op’s 40th year.  We hope that member-owners will join us in this opportunity to learn more about the Co-op, our Board, and our exciting plans for the future. Details will be in-store, as well as in the Co-op’s e-news and newsletter.
